The B96 licence is not a driving licence, but an authorisation allowing the holder to drive a combination of vehicles whose total MAM does not exceed 4,250 kg. This combination must consist of:

  • A vehicle authorised by a B licence whose MAM is below 3,500 kg.
  • A trailer or semi-trailer with a MAM of more than 750 kg, provided that the combination does not exceed 4,250 kg. Above that weight, a B+E licence is required.

In other words, if for example you want to hitch a caravan, a pleasure boat, a horse trailer, or certain machinery to your car, you need a B96 licence.

In addition, the trailer must carry a red number plate, it must pass its corresponding vehicle inspection test (ITV) and be insured, independently of the towing vehicle's insurance.
